Most of us don’t give a thought to stair railings, but they are not just a safety feature, they can add an interesting architectural accent to your home. There are several different types of stair railing but the most used are wood, wrought iron, aluminum, stainless steel and vinyl. Vinyl railing is the perfect choice for outdoor porch or patio projects because they are durable and easy to clean. Aluminum or stainless steel railing comes in many different colors and styles and will most often be seen in a powder coated finish. Wrought iron can be used both indoors and outdoors but is commonly seen in a living room or front porch stairway. Wooden stairway railings are best used on indoor stair projects.

Remodeling a stairway inside or outside your home can be a large project: sometimes simply replacing the stairway railings is enough to give a completely different feel to your home. Most comptent DIYers will be ale to tackle replacing railing on simple stairway designs, but for more intricate designs or complete stairway remodeling you would be best to use a specialized contractor.
