Top Interior Design Trends 2023

March 10, 2023, by: Greca Sandford

Here at RenoCompare we like to keep up to date with the ever shifting landscape of home decor and interior design trends: it’s kind of fascinating to see what the uber-cool and trend-setting authorities put forward as the hot new thing and see how these current top interior design trends filter down into the actual furnishings, fixtures and styles that you see in stores and in design magazines or websites.

So we’ve researched various interior design gurus to find the new interior design trends that are being promoted for 2023. For those of you who are contemplating a full scale remodel next year, adding some of these ideas into your plans will bring your home right up to date!

But don’t worry if your remodel is already done, for the most part these 2023 home décor trends are easily incorporated by choosing on-trend accessories and soft furnishings to complement your existing décor.

2016 decor trends - intro

And, as one of the key trends in interior design is to keep your choices as environmentally friendly as possible, there is plenty of scope for upgrading existing furniture by doing very simple things like re-painting or re-upholstering them.

In any case, interior trends are not something that should dictate your personal style – in the end your home will always look best if you fill it with the things you really love.

Natural and Contrasting Textures

One our favorite interior design trend for 2023 is layering natural and contrasting textures, as defined by the team at Design Like:

“the sole object of desire in almost every room will focus on creating depths of texture that represent all things cozy and comfortable. Playful yet sophisticated, favorites are faux fur, suede and brushed velvet mixed together to create… warmth, color and emotional interest to make your home feel, well, truly like a home.”

Combining lots of textures and favoring organic, natural and undefined shapes will be the key ways to blend this designer trend into your home.

Mix and match lots of textured textiles, use contrasting wood finishes, and opt for warm, natural tones like in this supremely cozy yes elegant bedroom pictured above.

And don’t be afraid of combining different styles together: the bedroom above pairs a classic paneled wall, complete with chair and picture rails, with the rough-and-ready, cabin-like unfinished wood panels on the other side to great affect.

Warm Metals and Mixed Metals

mixed metals - houzz

A while back the metals of choice for all fixtures and fittings was chrome or stainless steel – you literally couldn’t find any other option in most kitchen/ bathroom stores. But recently – as designers have increasingly embraced retro fashions – we’ve seen more and more warmer toned metals like brass, copper and gold appearing in the best-dressed kitchens and bathrooms.

For 2023 warm metals continue to be popular, but also this burgeoning trend has now come full circle, with mixed metals being the way forward. Don’t just take our word for it, this is what House Beautiful has to say:

“platinum, gold, copper, steel – as long as they’ve got metallic sheen, they go together in our book. It’s bling like you’ve never seen before.”

This is great news if you’ve already heavily invested in chrome – all you need to do is swap in a few key items in a different metal tone to bring your design on-trend. As in the kitchen pictured above, the chrome extractor hood, oven and silvery edging on the counter tops are paired with copper bar stools, and over on the right hand side there’s a copper vessel placed on a gold embossed table and bench with matching gold legs.

By keeping everything else white, gray and adding careful splashes of color, the whole room is beautifully balanced and extremely modern.

Eco, Sustainable & Artisanal

eco friendly - two twenty one

As mentioned earlier, the world of interior design is going to get a whole lot more conscientious! This top trend involves us finding ways to update existing furnishings and also aiming to use or purchase items from sustainable, eco friendly sources.

As Macala Wright reports:

“from the foam in our couches to the foundations that prefab homes are laid on… sustainability is at the heart of anything that is being manufactured today. Recycling, repurposing, reinventing and reusing are all things that consumers are beginning to consider when they make purchases today.”

We’re also seeing much more promotion of handmade, artisan crafted goods.

This latest interior design trend is especially great for DIY and crafting fans looking to upcycle old furniture, fabric scraps, wood pallets, and so on; and there is a ton of how-to projects out there for novices to try their hands on.

Of course this home decor trend isn’t exactly new – way back in 2012 Chelsea from the Two Twenty One blog turned an old dresser she picked up from Craigslist into the smart TV stand picture above with not much more than a sander, some wood filler, paint and some smart new door knobs! (Click on the link above for the full project detail)

But the great news is that now eco friendly, sustainable and artisan goods are truly mainstream, giving more and more people the possibility of making good decisions.

Geometric Patterns, especially Tiles

Geometric pattern is one of the two key pattern trends for 2023. As Tara Mastroeni reports on Freshome:

“when it comes to adding visual interest to a room, there’s no easier way to make an impact than by adding a few geometric shapes. The great thing about this trend is that it can easily be incorporated into any style of design. Those who like an ultra-modern look should consider making a statement with shapely furniture pieces or light fixtures. For a more traditional look, simply incorporate a geometric pattern into the room using floor tiles or accent textiles.”

A key area where geometric pattern really comes into its own, is of course, tile. If opting for a geometric pattern on your floor seems a bit too risky (what if you get bored of it/ hate it after a while?), then opt for geometric tiles in a smaller area like a kitchen splashback that can be easily re-tiled in the future.

And by keeping the tile pattern uniform but playing with different color shades you’ll add a very definitive, deliberate contemporary edge to the overall décor.

Bold Floral & Leafy Fabric and Wallpaper Prints

The other key pattern trend for 2023 is the return of bold floral and leafy patterns, particularly in fabrics and wallpapers. Maria Killam reporting on the High Point Market furniture trade show noted that

“florals, including dark florals (remember florals with a black background from the 80s?), are back. Of course, they’re reinterpreted so that we’ll love them again!“

Going all out with a super sized floral wallpaper like this fabulous one pictured above from Ellie Cashman is one way to go with this trend; but as this is also a follow-on from the organic, natural, textured trend mentioned earlier, you can also go with less audacious colors mixed with more leafy, tropical style patterns such as those in the Palmetto series from Harlequin.

Another top decor trend here is to mix and match different floral fabrics to create a relaxed, layered look that appears to have been thrown together just by chance!

Dramatic Color, especially Blue

Finally, the universally agreed upon key decor color for 2023 is blue – but not any old blue, of course! The blue for 2023 is dark and dramatic.

Maria Killam predicts that “navy is a best seller right now, as are indigo and denim shades… these stronger shades of blue seem fresh and new”; and Tara Mastroeni agrees:

“bold blues such as cobalt, navy and royal blue are the hues to use for the upcoming year. Fortunately, there is no shortage of ways to incorporate this shade into your interiors. It all depends on how impactful you want the color to be.”

Choosing a dramatic blue paint for a bedroom, as in the image above, is clearly a super “impactful” way to get this trend in interior design into your home. But equally, keeping the walls white and simply using deep blues in accent such as the cushions and throw on the bed here would be a less overwhelming but still on-trend option.

If you like these deep blues, but don’t want to fully commit to them you can also give a nod to this trend by choosing geometric patterns or floral fabrics that incorporate the color in their design.

Another thing to bear in mind, is that blue is not the only color that is being promoted for 2023 – so so check out our report on the best interior color trends of the year!
